Ancient Greek sculpture seems to have a timeless quality – provoking reactions that may range from awe to alienation. Yet it was a particular product of its age: and to know how and why it was once created is to embark upon an understanding of its 'Classic' status. 700 BC to the end of antiquity, Nigel Spivey expounds not only the social function of Greek sculpture but also its aesthetic and technical achievement. Fresh approaches are reconciled with traditional modes of study as the connoisseurship of this art is sympathetically unravelled, while source material and historical narrative 9780521756983 Takes the story from c.750 BC to modern times to present a view of 'Classical' art which encompasses both ancient and modern245 x 190 x 16 mm176 b/w illus. 8 colour illus. 1. Most books on politics are written by outsiders. Even if they are written by politicians, a lot of the intrigue and detail seems to be missing. This is one of the few books on politics and political journalism written by an insider and one with decades of experience in federal politics. It is often hilarious, occasionally sad, sometimes infuriating, but endlessly fascinating and illuminating as it takes us on a life journey: from one country to another, from oThis is a great book for students of politics and the media, and for lovers of scuttlebutt everywhere. This classic work not only records developments in the form and style of Greek drama, it also analyses the reasons for these changes. It provides illuminating answers to questions that have confronted generations of students, such as: * why did Aeschylus introduce the second actor? Sophocles develop character drawing? Euripides' plots so bad and others so good? Greek Tragedy is neither a history nor a handbook, but a penetrating work of criticism which all students of literature will find suggestive and stimulating. HomeGreek Tragedy Greek Tragedy by H. D.
